Foundation Sequence

Building a Solid Foundation

Sthiram Sukham Asanam – Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra 2.46

One of the most well-known aphorisms from the Yoga Sutras, this verse means that a yogic pose should be stable, steady, and comfortable. When asanas are performed with strain or discomfort, they contradict the very essence of yoga.

With this in mind, the Foundation Sequence emphasizes fundamental yogic postures. Its primary goal is to help practitioners sit comfortably in meditation while also serving as a stepping stone for those who wish to explore more advanced asanas.

Rooted in tradition, this sequence aligns with the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, which identifies 33 essential postures as the foundation of a well-rounded practice. By mastering these fundamental poses, practitioners cultivate confidence, stability, and a strong base before progressing to more complex movements.

The Foundation Sequence establishes key elements such as strength, endurance, and proper alignment. It enhances flexibility and mobility, creating openness in the body to prepare for deeper postures. Additionally, breathwork is integrated into each movement, fostering a sense of steadiness and ease.

Most importantly, this sequence nurtures the body-mind connection, encouraging awareness and presence in every pose—making it a vital step in any yogi’s journey.
